Bordeaux is a port city in southwestern France, the capital of the New Aquitaine region and the prefecture of the Gironde department. With a population of more than 260,000 inhabitants and a metropolitan area of more than 800,000 inhabitants, it is the fifth largest city in France, after Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Lille.
Bordeaux was recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco for the exceptional urban ensemble it represents.
The city is known for its vineyards, especially since the 18th century, which was its golden age. Former capital of Guyenne, Bordeaux is located on the edge of the Landes de Gascogne. In 1957, Bordeaux received the Europa Prize, together with Turin, for its remarkable efforts in promoting the ideal of European unity.
The commitment that the city has been making in recent times for sustainable mobility is noteworthy: bicycles, scooters and public transport have experienced strong development in recent years.
