Founded in the 14th century over the remains of an old Inca city, Quito is the Capital of the Republic of Equador. The city is placed 2.800 metres over the sea in a valley located in the hillside of the Pichincha Volcano and surrounded by other volcanoes such as the Casitagua and the Atacazo. The city is the main administrative, econòmic and cultural hub of the Andinean country. The good conservation of the old centre of Quito leaded UNESCO to declare World Heritage the whole city in 1978.
