Happy World Book Day

At the International Association of Educating Cities, we join the celebration of World Book Day!

23-04-2025    World International Day

There are many initiatives promoted by the cities in the network to foster reading and access to culture.

As paper and digital formats now coexist—just as papyrus and parchment once did—many cities are incorporating digital technology into their libraries to broaden access to resources, as well as creating collaborative and innovative spaces to promote creativity and active learning, and integrating programs that support digital literacy and social inclusion.

Today, we highlight the following experiences from cities in the network:

  • Beacons of Knowledge and Innovation in Curitiba: Inspired by the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria, they were created to expand the democratization of information and access to culture for the local population. Initially conceived as neighborhood libraries, the Lighthouses have become a cultural and educational landmark in the city. In 2000, digital culture was incorporated, and in 2017, a maker space was added—a dedicated area for creation, experimentation, and innovation.
  • Prisma Geek Space of Passo Fundo: A disruptive space for creative learning, reading, and authorship, from print to digital. Covering literature, education, culture, arts, technology, and games, it aims to establish Passo Fundo as a regional hub for culture, education, and innovation.
  • The Human Library of Valongo for students: A place where you can “borrow” a person as if they were a book. The goal is to create a framework for dialogue through which to address stereotypes and prejudices related to ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, etc., promoting tolerance and social inclusion. A place where “borrowed” people answer questions asked by readers. This is not an ordinary library.

Share your innovative experiences in promoting reading and access to culture with us here.

We wish you a Happy World Book Day!
