Towards the Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals
The International Association of Educating Cities (IAEC) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) have contributed to the Third High Level Political Forum Report on Local and Regional Governments: ‘Towards the Localization of the SDGs’.
The report has been presented at the High Level Political Form that took place in New York on 15th July, with the goal of highlighting the role of local governments in tackling global challenges and localising the SDG.
The IAEC contribution has focused on SDG 4 to show the involvement of local governments in achieving a Quality Inclusive Education and Lifelong Training for all.
The report contains a large number of initiatives carried out by over 30 IAEC cities, which illustrate that local governments are an important network of innovation in formal, non-formal and informal education. Indeed, local authorities can coordinate collaborative networks with multiple actors to tackle local needs. Likewise, the partnership with different levels of government and local actors in the design of educative policies ensures greater consistency and resource efficiency, to better meet local needs and to broaden the scope of public policies (pages 58-65).
However, despite the progress shown in the report, cities still face many difficulties in ensuring equal access in the right to education. To this end, it is important to recognise the contribution of local governments to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and to ensure they receive transfers and resources accordingly. To the extent that local authorities evaluate the impact of their policies in the realization of the right to education, they will be in a better position to influence the global agenda and to call for greater decentralisation of resources and responsibilities.
