Meeting of the IAEC Northern European Group
Goteborg hosted the working group of Northern Europe on 9 and 10 October with the theme: Social Inclusion Through Education.
The cities of Brussels, Espoo, Helsinki, Katowice, Munich, Tampere and Goteborg participated in the meeting. The program included the study visit to two initiatives of the host city within the Equal Gothenburg Program, which seeks to reduce disparities in living conditions and health among the population and ensure a socially sustainable development. The visits, which followed the critical peer review methodology, were: “The city where we read to our children” and “Family centres”, the latter aimed at promoting the well-being and health of children and their families.
Participants also reflected on the speech of Prof. Girma Berhanu, Department of Education and Special Education of the University of Goteborg, focused on: “Disadvantage, Education and Place: An Inclusive and Social Sustainable Perspective”. Moreover, participant cities exchanged their experiences on inclusion through education.
In the framework of its 2018 action plan, the group agreed to hold two meetings in order to continue its work, one in Tampere and another in Cascais on the occasion of the International Congress of Educating Cities (November 2018).
