It occupies a surface of 466,2 km²  in the north side of the Mountains of Arrábida at the foot of a hill whose top is presided by the Castle of the city. The city has a much diversified economy. A significant part of the population work in multinational companies. At the same time, in rural point such as the Fregresía do Quinta do Anjo the production of cheese and wine is still common. Among its historic heritage it is remarkable the ensemble of the Castro de Chibanes, with remains of the Copper and Iron Ages and the Roman era.
