Portuguese city of the Region of Alentejo. The city has a surface of 277,4 km
2 and is crossed by several rivers, among which the Maior which give name to the city. During centuries, the main economic activity of the city was the extraction of rock salt from the natural salt evaporation ponds of the Fonte da Bica, Candeeiros mountain range. Nowadays, economy has diversified. The industry of mineral extraction coexists with metal-mechanic and agroalimentary industries. The last one, due to its extensive vineyards and apple trees fields.
