The city is a farming and trade hub having food and pottery industries. Santarém has seen the pass of the several old civilizations such as the Phoenician, the old Greek and the Roman. Later on, since the 7 to the 12 century, the city received the influence of the Muslim culture. Its heritage, environment and gastronomy are the sources of a booming tourism sector.
