Located in a bay of the Setúbal peninsula and protected by the Arrábida mountains, it was inhabited in the ancient times by various civilizations (Romans, Muslims, franks, etc.). Within its architectonic heritage should be noted the Sesimbra castle, the Santiago fort and the Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel fort. Its principal economic activities are related to fishing and tourism.
