Pontevedra decided to create an urban model for people that can restore public space as a meeting and living together place. Thus, in 1999, a major transformation process began.
Pontevedra created its own mobility system that fosters the use of the most simple and universal means of transport: walking, followed by the bicycle and public transport. To do this, it pedestrianized the downtown, reduced the motor vehicle traffic in the entire city and took measures to guarantee universal accessibility. The downtown has become a living space for residence and work, and an energizer of the city. At the same time, the city has opted for local services and has carried out measures to integrate all the city’s districts. The city has also promoted citizen participation, local culture, collective life and the occupation of public space, especially by children, through the organisation of festivals, parties and other events. The city with a soul is a city of dynamic people, people who walk, of a citizenry proud of its space and history, of people who participate and feel part of their city.
